Hanoi Declaration

What was the Hanoi Declaration in 2000?

The United Nations Asian Meeting on the Question of Palestine was held in Hanoi from March 1 to March 3, 2000. Vietnam, host of the conference, was a long-time supporter of the Palestinian Arabs.
Participants adopted the Hanoi Declaration which proclaimed a commitment to support the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State. They also called for full membership in the United Nations for "Palestine", the non-nation of the Palestinian Arabs represented by Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority. The group's recommendation for full membership was not contingent on any element of the agreed-upon Oslo peace process and, as such, represented United Nations interference with the peace process at the instigation of the Palestinians.
