What was UN Security Council Resolution 340?
On October 25, 1973 the United Nations Security Council met and adopted
UN Security Council Resolution 340.
Like Resolution 338 and
339, this resolution is quite short,
noting that the cease-fire had not been accomplished and demanding that:
- The cease-fire be observed and the parties return to positions as of October 22, so
as not to gain from disregarding the cease-fire.
- Asks the UN Secretary General to increase the number of UN observers supervising
the cease-fire.
- Authorizes setting up the
Second United Nations Emergency Force
to separate the Egyptian and Israeli forces and facilitate the cease-fire agreements.
